Public Safety Officer Standards and Training (POST)
Welcome to the website for the Montana Public Safety Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council.
We are located in the Maple Building on the beautiful Montana Law Enforcement Academy campus in Helena.
The POST Council has written and adopted new rules, Chapter 23.13 of the Administrative Rules of Montana. The rules, which went into effect August 1, 2008, include changes concerning the certification of Montana public safety officers and instructors. The new rules also outline the steps necessary to file a complaint against an officer.
Under Section 44-4-401(2)(e) of the Montana Code Annotated, reserve officers are now under the direction of the Council. Local law enforcement agencies remain in charge of the appointment and training of reserve officers. However, an Employment Status form must be submitted to POST for Montana reserve officers as for all other public safety officers.
POST forms are now available online in a fillable format that can be downloaded to your computer. Agency administrators or their designees still have to sign the documents before mailing them to our office. At this time, the only form we accept electronically is the Employment Status form.
Another important change is the way officers access their training records online. We have eliminated the use of Social Security numbers in the database, replacing them with nine-digit alpha-numeric POST ID numbers. A list of these numbers has been forwarded to each agency administrator.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact my office. As a reminder, POST quarterly meetings are the third Thursday in February, May, August and November. See the meeting schedule for specific dates, times and locations.
I look forward to continuing to serve the Council and the State of Montana in my capacity as Executive Director.
Wayne C. Ternes, Executive Director

Revocations and Suspensions
Under Administrative Rule 23.13, Subchapter 7, the POST Council reviews complaints against public safety officers and, if appropriate, may revoke or suspend an officer's certification. The Montana POST Integrity Report provides a summary of revocation and suspension cases on which the POST Council has ruled since 2004. The report is updated quarterly following POST Council meetings.
